Morels and Ash?

Postby bwteal » Apr Thu 20, 2017 7:31 pm

So, a lot of my past success with morels have been around Ash trees, especially on my and adjacent properties. The Problem, EMERALD ASH BORER!
In the last 2 years they have killed over 35 ash trees in my and neighbors property. Once the tree is dead, no more rooms. Anyone else seeing this?
I don't think we have a live Ash left.

I have always liked dead elm trees to hunt around. Never paid any attention to ash trees. I don't think you can find a living ash tree up here around us any more.

Morels are mycorhyzal with every type of ash..elm, tulip poplar, aspen , some pines especially white pine, cottonwood, black cherry, apple and other fruit trees, multiflora rose, some ferns and grasses and cane type plants like raspberries.

A morel will form a mycorryzal relationship with almost any tree available in a pinch...the. Ushroom want sugar which the tree has in abundance and offers in return fixation of metal and other micronutrients is hard for the tree to process. It works both ways however...the tree also selects the mushroom that is most advantageous to it.
You never see a fishing boat parked in front of a psychiatrists office .....

So once the tree is dead... no more sugar; thus, no more morels. Guess I'll plant elms and apples where the ash were until an invasive kills them out too! :bang
