BEST GILL BAIT?????

Postby abishop » May Sun 29, 2011 12:24 pm

I was curious to see how everyone thinks. What is your favorite bait to catch the scrappy gill? Crickets, red worms, beesmoths, maggots, flies, tube jigs, minni-mites, spinners,etc.etc.etc.... the list goes on and on. Thanks 4 replies.

A 5' Cast Net.
Just kidding. I get a lot of gills when I'm casting for shad under the docks. Had @ 50 small crappie in one throw at Monroe a couple weeks ago and not one shad. :dunno

I almost exclusively buy Red Wigglers. Crickets have their place also, I mainly use crickets later in the summer as they are harder to fish with[ its a One Shot Deal] with a cricket, IE you better be "Johhny on the Spot" with the hook set or the bait is gone. I mainly go to crickets later in the summer when the bite has slowed a lot, cause if you can get em on wigglers or bee moths you might as well go that route, its a much easier way to fish. Also I often run a dropper style set up with a single hook baited with a wiggler on the bottom and about 2' up the line I will tie on a gill pill or another ice fishing hook that has a horizontal presentation to it with a bee moth on it, you would be surprised how many gills will hit the ice jig as it is an unusual presentation for that time of the year as it seems to be an easy samll sized meal, I have caught a lot of nice gills in August on a size 12 gill pill, maybe give it a try. Also if you can get a way with No Bait I like using a 16th ounce road runner.

Crickets is #1
Water wigglers #2
Fisherman's Prayer
I pray that I may live to fish
Until my dying day
And when it comes to my last cast,
I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
And peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be Judged
BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.
