Was able to get out for a few hours yesterday at a pond between Martinsville and Morgantown and found 7 inches of solid ice. I have fished this pond before, but never through the ice. It is about 2 1/2 acres and was built only 5 years ago by damming up a creek in the middle of the woods. Nearly all of the trees and brush was left standing in the pond. While that makes it scenic, I also found out that it makes it difficult to fish with 2lb test line.
I did manage to catch 8 smallish gills (6 inch avg) and lost a couple jigs and fish in the timber. There is a 6 acre pond on the same property that we caught a few 4 to 7 pound bass out of this summer that I will try next time. Much of the timber, but not all, was removed from it.
